Why Reapplying Skin Shield Really Matters

Every time we get an email that starts “I love the smell, but I felt bitten again after an hour,” the answer is almost always the same. The formula is working exactly as designed. What is missing is the reapplication.

How Skin Shield actually works

Skin Shield sits on the outer layer of your skin and releases a very light, plant-derived vapour that mosquitoes find genuinely unpleasant. The essential-oil actives (citronella, lemongrass, or lemon eucalyptus) evaporate steadily and form a small protective envelope biting insects tend to avoid.

Because the actives protect by evaporating, they are eventually all evaporated. When the last of the volatile actives has released into the air, the envelope is gone. This is not a flaw. It is how the entire category of plant-based repellents works. The trade-off is a gentler skin story, a lighter scent, and none of the harsh residue of a synthetic active.

How long each variant actually lasts

Skin Shield Citronella & Lemongrass: every 30 to 60 minutes in normal conditions. Reapply sooner in humidity, after swimming, or heavy sweating.

Skin Shield Lemon Eucalyptus: every 60 minutes in normal conditions. Same rules for humidity, swimming, and sweat.

Both are equally effective. The choice is purely fragrance preference.

Sunscreen, sweat, swimming and towelling off

Sunscreen first. Wait two to three minutes. Then Skin Shield. This keeps your SPF working and lets the repellent sit on the outer skin layer where it works. Getting the order wrong dulls both.

Sweating heavily is the fastest way to strip a repellent off. Swimming and towelling off wipe most of the formula away regardless of water-resistance claims. Reapply immediately after either. Even a cool towel across your face resets the clock.

How to apply well

Shake the bottle. Hold around 15 cm from the skin. Spray a light, even mist. For the face, spray onto your palms and press gently, avoiding the eye area.

Do not forget the parts most people miss: tops of the feet, ankles above the sock line, the back of the neck under the hairline, and the strip of skin between a t-shirt hem and a waistband.

Reapplication is protection, not overuse
